SCAS and Sussex CAA Indoor Championships 2009

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The 2009 Sussex CAA indoor Championships will take place at the K2, Pease Pottage Hill, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 9BQ.

We are pleased to be hosting the 2009 Southern Counties Archery Society (SCAS) Indoor Championships as part of the same event. The SCAS Indoor will take place during the day’s first session, followed by the Sussex Team Championship and, finally, the Sussex Individual Championships.

All three competitions have been awarded national record status by Archery GB (GNAS).

Useful links: K2 website, K2 map and directions, SCAS website.

The K2

The K2 is a really cracking venue, one of the best available to archers in the Southern Counties region, and we’re sure that you will enjoy shooting there. It is also easily accessible from both the A23 and M23, so the travelling distance and time for every archer within the SCAS region is reasonable.

The venue’s facilities, including the cafeteria, will be open all day. The main hall is spacious, warm and well lit, making it the ideal venue for indoor archery. It can accommodate 32 target butts – that’s 128 archers – in each session, so this will be a big and memorable event.

All three competitions are open to individuals and clubs affiliated to GNAS or another FITA Member Association. Archers from our neighbouring counties are very welcome to shoot in the Sussex Individual Championships, which will take place after the SCAS Indoor.

Also note that the Sussex Team Championships is open to clubs from outside Sussex. The 2008 Championships included teams from Canterbury Archers of Kent and Mole Valley Bowmen from Surrey and, dare we say it, the tournament was very enjoyable for everyone who took part. We hope to see more clubs from outside Sussex at the 2009 Championships.

Don’t miss out on what will be an excellent conclusion to this year’s indoor season: download your entry forms and send them to the organisers today.

Entry forms: pdf format; Word document.

Tournament schedule

The event will comprise three separate competitions:

  • SCAS Indoor Championships – Portsmouth round
    - assembly 9.15 am
    - inner ten scoring on three spot target faces for compound bows
    - entry fee £8.50
  • Sussex CAA Team Championship – 18m FITA round
    - assembly 12.30 pm
    - teams of 4 nominated archers
    - teams must include 2 recurve archers and either one lady or one junior
    - inner ten scoring will apply for compound bows
    - entry fee £30 per team
  • Sussex CAA Individual Championships – 18m FITA round
    - assembly 3.45 pm
    - inner ten scoring on three spot target faces for compound bows
    - entry fee £8.50

All three competitions are open to individuals and clubs affiliated to GNAS or another FITA Member Association. Entries will be accepted on a first received, first entered basis.

If target lists and results are required by post, enclose two large SAEs with your entry. Alternatively (and preferably) enter your e-mail address on the entry form. This will save you postage, make life easier for the organisers (show some love, people) and you’ll also receive an acknowledgement by e-mail when your entry form is received.

Record status

This is a record status event and so adherence to the GNAS dress code (see Rule 307) is mandatory. There will be no exceptions.

Please note that your footwear must also be suitable for indoor venues, i.e. it should have white soles and must not mark or otherwise damage the hall floor.

Any archer asked to provide a sample for drug testing must comply. A refusal will be treated as a positive result. A parent or guardian must sign a junior’s entry form to signify their consent to their child being tested. They should also explain the implications of drug testing to their child.

Entries

Send your entries to: Indoor 2009, 15 Holton Hill, Woodingdean, Brighton, BN2 6RQ.

Remember to:

  • use the correct entry forms (complete a separate form for each competition)
  • enclose a cheque (payable to SCAA) in payment of your entry fee
  • enclose two large SAEs if you don’t have an e-mail address
  • badger your club secretary to enter one (or better two or three) teams

Closing date: a waiting list will operate when entries are full

Target lists and results

Target lists, results and further information will be published on the Sussex Archery website.

If you have any questions or require further information, e-mail the tournament organiser.

Arundown Portsmouth Tournament, 16th November 2008

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The 35th Arundown Portsmouth tournament was held at Angmering School on 16th November 2008.

A full entry list featured some well-known names from past and present. Notable performances included Gary Kinghorn’s 583 in the Gents Compound, 570 from 14 year old Will Martin of Worthing AC in the Gents Recurve and a new County record of 441 by 11 year old Emily Darling of Ditchling AC in the Ladies Barebow.

Full results from the tournament can be found here.

Guildford AC FITA 25, 18th January 2009

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Guildford AC’s annual FITA 25 will take place at the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre on Sunday, 18th January 2009.

This is a well-established event in the shooting calendar so, not surprisingly, the first session is now full. Spaces are still available in the second and third sessions, however, so there is still time to secure your place at this record status shoot.

You can find more information and entry forms on the Guildford AC website.

Indoor archery at Falmer School with Falcon Bowmen

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Falcon Bowmen’s indoor facility at Falmer school is once again open to visitors.

We meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, starting at around 6.45 pm and finishing at 9pm.

Target fees are £4 for adults and £2 for juniors and concessions. If you come along more than once in the same week, fees are £2 and £1 respectively for subsequent sessions.

Please bring your current Archery GB/GNAS registration card with you. We will need to see this before you begin to shoot.

If you intend to shoot frequently, you might want to consider club membership. This costs £144 per year and is payable in 12 monthly instalments by standing order. That’s £12 per month, which will save money if you shoot at Falmer more than once a week and it also enables you to spread the cost of your shooting over 12 months.

Record Status shoots at RN South Coast Archers

Friday, November 7th, 2008

RN South Coast Archers in the neighbouring county of Hampshire are running four record status shoots in January and February next year:

The journey from most parts of West Sussex to the venue is under an hour and the natives are quite friendly, so these are well worth considering if you are looking for tournaments early in 2009.  You can download the entry forms by clicking the links above or visit the RN South Coast Archers website.

Sussex Archery

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Welcome to the official website of the Sussex County Archery Association.

We hope that Sussex archery clubs, their members and fellow archers in neighbouring counties find the information on the site useful and informative.  We also hope that you will contribute to the site by posting information on your club’s activities – open tournaments, club shoots, individual achievements, coaching, change of officers, etc, etc – to the site.

How do you post? First, set up an account by clicking the Register link close to the top of the sidebar on the right hand side of your screen.  Registering won’t take more than a few minutes, following which you can Log in (you’ll find the Log in link beneath the Register link).  When you’ve done that, click Write at the top left of your screen and then, well, write:-)  You’ll find some more user instructions here.

Someone somewhere has read that last paragraph and thought “I don’t have much in the way of PC skills. What if I do something and break the  site?”  At the risk of tempting Dr Sod to enter stage left, that’s very unlikely; but, in any case, we’ve set up a demo site for people to practise with (think of it as the cyber equivalent of two ends of sighters). You can find it here.

A gallery script, enabling you to upload photos, will be available to use in early December.

That’s probably enough to get people started, so it’s over to you.  The site will thrive or suffer a demise depending on whether or not it is updated regularly so, if you are a Sussex archer, get posting!
