Personal best at RN South Coast Archers

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Current Southern Counties Ladies Recurve Clout Champion Liz Bowyer of Arundown AC lowered her sight to take third place with a new personal best of 233 in the national record status Worcester shoot at RN South Coast Archers on 18th January.

Liz’s fellow members of the team that won the National Recurve Team Clout Championship in October 2008 also weighed in with useful scores. Russell French scored 273 for fourth place in the Gents Recurve, while Jon Stafford shot 258 for tenth place in the same competition.

More of the latest news from Arundown can be found on the Arundown Archery Club blog.

Meanwhile at the Indoor Championships…

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Casting aside current concerns about the immediate future of the 2009 Outdoor Championships, Sussex can look forward to a sell-out at the next shoot in its archery calendar on 15th March at the K2 in Crawley.

Just 39 places remain unfilled in the Southern Counties Archery Society (SCAS) Indoor Championships, 15 in the Sussex Indoor Team Championship and 41 in the Sussex Indoor Individual Championship.  If you and your club wish to shoot in this event, now is the time to download your entry forms and send them to the Tournament Organiser:

Many thanks to those who have come forward to help on the weekend of the shoot.  Six more volunteers are needed to assist with setting up the hall between 6 pm and 9 pm on Saturday 14th March.  Another four are needed on the day of the shoot, Sunday 15th March.

Roger Wolff continues to live in hope rather than expectation of some people swapping action for talk but, for the record, he can be contacted by calling 01273 204428.

· arranging a caterer

· appointing the judges

· arranging a Lady P/Lord P

· preparing the entry forms

· publicizing the event

· preparing the target lists

On the weekend - organizing the helpers from the Clubs for:

  • the field layout (on the Friday beforehand)

Sussex success at Guildford FITA

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Last weekend’s world record status 25m FITA at Guildford saw Dawn Rowlands of Holbrook Archers score 414, a new National Ladies Longbow record.  Congratulations, Dawn!

Another notable performance by a Sussex lady came from Gillian Wood of Chichester Bowmen, whose score of 537 secured second place in the Ladies Recurve.  And Pam King of Old Colesdon Archers took third place with a score of 1031 in the Ladies Compound Double Round.

Sussex men provided a strong showing, with Ron Smith of Newhaven AC (422) and Mike Rowlands of Holbrook Archers (322) taking second and third place respectively in the Gents Longbow. A score of 1114 gave Stephen Allen of Horsham third place in the Gents Compound Double Round.

Among the younger folk, Thomas Hooper of Bognor Regis AC shot 528 to take first place in the Junior Gents Recurve.  Well done, Thomas, and well done also to Daniel Phillips of Holbrook Archers for his fifth place in the same competition.

Full results from the competition can be found here.

Step forward! Help needed at the K2

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

With the 2009 Sussex indoor Championships only a couple of months away, preparations for the event are now in full swing.

Help is needed to set up the main hall at the K2 in Crawley on the evening of Saturday 14th March, starting at 6 pm and finishing no later than 9 pm.  A minimum of 12 helpers are needed to assist the organisers and judges with this task.

To date, nine willing souls have stepped forward to volunteer:

  • Iain Cadle (Ditchling AC)
  • Bob Darling (Ditchling AC)
  • Emily Darling (Ditchling AC)
  • Andrew Holdsworth (Plumpton Bowmen)
  • Steve Hooper (Bognor Regis AC)
  • John Humphrey (Ditchling AC)
  • Rob Keeling (Arundown AC)
  • Rebecca Tucknott (Ditchling AC)
  • Brian Wise (Holbrook Archers)

Mileage expenses will be paid to everyone who turns out to help, so it will cost you nothing except a few hours to assist the County in staging its biggest ever indoor championships.

Helpers are also needed on the day of the shoot, Sunday 15th March. The judges have requested a team of eight people to assist with changing target faces and the like. To date, we have four volunteers:

  • Richard Cobden (Arundown AC)
  • Rob Keeling (Arundown AC)
  • Rebecca Tucknott (Ditchling AC)
  • Brian Wise (Holbrook Archers)

Again mileage expenses will be paid to everyone who turns out to help.

Roger Wolff looks forward to being flattened by the rush of people coming forward to join the team. He can be contacted on 01273 204428.
