The tournament was shot as a single detail, so it was unhurried with everyone on their way home at a very reasonable time. Saturday had been planned to suit Novice and Intermediate Archers, and some did take part, but not as many as hoped. But it was great to see the ones who did taking on their first ‘real’ tournament. The weather was windy on Saturday, overcast and showery at the start but turning warm and bright, Sunday was dry and sunny with a light wind.
Special thanks to all the Volunteers, including …
Set-out of range layout: Dave Webster, Rod Brown
Equipment fabrication: Chris Chedzoy, Kevin Doswell
Placing Targets and arranging the layout of the field on Friday : Geri Barnden, Tony Jerome, Helen Butcher, Richard Bennett, Nick Lea, Andras Tokes, Ben Green, Kevin Lambie, Graham Stevens
Before, during and after the Shoot: Bob and Brenda New, Rowena Berterelli, Roo Williamson, András Tőkés, Philip Van Buren, Rod Brown, Charles Poland, Mark Worsfold, Geri Barnden, Richard Bennett, Keith Cross
And to Ardingly Scouts who laid on the Food Stand.

Olympic Qualifier!! and Junior Team Success

Monday, July 8th, 2019

Sussex Archer Bryony Pitman (Worthing AC and University of Northumbria), who was the GB reserve for the Rio Olympics, has qualified for Tokyo 2020, a massive and well-deserved achievement. Many congratulations from us all.

Sussex Juniors came out on top at the 3-way Match at Woking between Surrey, Kent and Sussex. Petra Ginman who was Team Captain also acted as Team Manager, and reports that the combined-bowstyle Junior team came out on top, with all the Senior Bowstyles ending in Second Place.

Terry White

Tuesday, May 28th, 2019

It is extremely sad to report the death of SCAA Vice-President Terry White, one of Sussex Archery’s greatest supporters over a remarkable span of sixty years. During that time Terry founded two Clubs in the Hastings area, and was Sussex Team Manager and a SCAA committee member for many years, eventually becoming Chairman, and was always a great innovator and encourager of archers, young and old. The funeral will be at Hastings Crematorium on Tuesday June 4th at 2 pm, and more details and a proper obituary will be posted here soon.
We’re sure Terry’s many friends in Archery will join together in sympathy with Pam, Trevor, Tyler and all Terry’s family.

Best of British

Sunday, May 12th, 2019

The new All-British 3-D Field Championships held just over the Border in Scotland turned out to be All-Sussex when it came to Barebow Champions.
Adele McPeake and Jason Meehan swept the board, taking home the Ladies and Gents trophies. Both archers are members of The High Weald club in the far east of the county, and Adele is organising the Sussex 3-D Championships, to be held at Etchingham on 15th and 16th June.

At a more local level, Regional, not National, Nicola Curtis of Adur Valley Archers was the winner of Longbow Day at the Southern Counties Archery Meeting on 14th May

New Inter-Counties Indoor League

Wednesday, January 9th, 2019

The Southern Counties have got in a huddle and in next to no time have set up an Inter-County Indoor Winter League – it’s not really a league this year, just an all against all Postal Shoot-Out, and we’re entering Teams – which are open to anyone and everyone who shoots a Portsmouth in Jan, Feb, and / or March. You hand it to your Club organiser and they send it in to our County organiser (but if you’re a direct member or your club hasn’t got an organiser, you can send it in yourself). There’ll be some local prizes, include Novice Awards, so you don’t have to be an Elite Archer to join in.

Annual General Meeting

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

The AGMs of both SCAA and the Martlets Coaching Guild were held on 1st December in Burgess Hill. 19 Clubs were represented out of a total of 25 (not counting the closed clubs that are completely self-contained) which is a big improvement on the last several years. Nearly all the posts on the Executive Committee are now filled, so SCAA is in a much better position to go forward.
And after 45 years there has been a change of General Secretary. Doreen Cannon has had to relinquish her position because of eyesight difficulties, but will continue to figure as a Life Vice-President. The incoming General Secretary is Mark Worsfold of Hellingly.
The Martlets Guild will be holding a series of Personal Development Workshops in January, February and March next year designed to increase Competition-Readiness, for reasonable standard intermediate and better archers hoping to get to, or over, the threshold into the County Team. And as a general sharpening-up opportunity for existing team members.
