Dogsbody Award

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Following the recent death of her husband Ron Cannon, his widow Doreen decided to present a unique and unusual award to the county.

Ron, a member of Worthing Archery Club for 50 years, was Treasurer, then Chairman of W.A.C. for over 20 years, was a member of the County Executive committee, and a member of the Martlets Guild. He undertook any job however large or small within the club, whether opening up, cutting grass, moving targets, clearing up, coaching , or even filling mole holes! Nothing was too much trouble.

Doreen decided that a fitting memorial to Ron would be a trophy to be presented to a member of a Sussex club who works tirelessly for the good of the club, the unsung heros who never get any recognition or thanks for all the effort put in without complaint. Formally this would be called “The Ron Cannon Memorial Trophy”, but she would like it to be called affectionately “The Dogsbody Award”, to be awarded at the A.G.M.

Several nominations were received from Sussex Clubs, and a short list was discussed by a panel. The “Dogsbody Award” is unique, having been made by Terry White of Bayeaux Bowmen, himself an archer of 60 years, and a former County Chairman. Terry made two awards from marquetry , so there are only two in existence, one for the winner, and a second for the runner up.

So it was with great pride and many thanks for all the hard work put in at their clubs, the first “Dogsbody Awards” were presented by Doreen to:

  • 1st place: Brian Savage, of Bognor Regis Archery Club
  • Runner up: Dave Biles, Chichester Bowmen
