Sussex Team In Action Outdoors at Regional inter-County Match after 2 years inaction

Monday, July 26th, 2021

As an antidote to 16 months of restrictions, Stuart Barber and his team from Hertfordshire organised a Friendly 10-County Match on 24th July, and Sussex sent a mix of experienced Team Members and new emerging talents to get back in the groove without the stress of a full-on competition. With support from a new management duo of Steven Gilbert and Tom Grey, let’s hope this is the start of a new phase for the SCAA Team, with a new emphasis on developing and encouraging a larger pool of SCAA archers to be ready to take part.
After a night of thunderstorms and lightning the shoot got underway in a downpour giving all the archers wet weather gear exposure to the elements. Hours in and precipitation stopped and humidity started to rise as did the shooting.
The team gelled and got underway with the task in hand. Nick Winfield soldiered on for the morning session feeling extremely unwell from some dodgy food dished up at his hotel the night before, hats off to him for his stoic performance. Sam, Ken and Phil gave other longbow competitors a run for their money as did the barebow contingency of Bertie, Dan, Simon and Nick – Bertie taking a ladies medal away for her B/B performance against a very tight scoring from other county teams with only a few points between each archer. Ed, Ben, Pete, (M) Jodie, Petra & Rachael (F) Recurve all pushed hard on with Pete having to retire from the PM session due to a previous shoulder injury playing up. Zara, Chris, Terry were all in the close points tally for the Compound event and demonstrated that all from Sussex were to be watched out for by other Counties as we start to pick up momentum.

A fantastically organised event with much preparation having gone into making it run smoothly. Very few hold-ups throughout the day with quick Boss changes for shoot throughs and a number of Bouncers but quickly cleared up and on with the shooting – hats off to the organisers as well and Judges for a great day out.
