Doreen receives AGB Honour

Tuesday, April 25th, 2017

DoreenCannonBronzePlaqueTrishLovellOur County Secretary Doreen Cannon was given due recognition by Archery GB when President Trish Lovell presented the Bronze Plaquette for her long service to Archery at the AGB AGM at the NEC in Birmingham.

Archery has played a very big part in Doreen’s life, and she has given an enormous amount back. Sussex Archery would have been very different without her input over half a century and more.  She was Secretary of Worthing Archery Club for nearly 50 years, has been County Secretary for over 40, was Regional Recurve Champion, a County Team Member continuously from the mid-1960s until the late 1990s, first Recurve then Compound, a member of the Championships Results team, Junior County Team Manager and then Senior Team Manager.

She is a County Coach and served many years as Secretary of the Martlets Coaching Group. She always makes a particular point of encouraging Juniors, both in her home club and throughout the County, and continues to run outdoor sessions for juniors on Saturdays round the year. Several of ‘her’ Juniors (and their children) have been high achievers and shot for England or Great Britain. She inaugurated a Junior Shoot which drew entrants from near and far, including youngsters like Andrea Gales and Jonathan Shales, although now it is mostly attended by Sussex Juniors; Doreen still hands out prizes, and gives personal presents to all the participants.

Only her second visit to a European 3-D Championships representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland with her Traditional set-up, and Michaela Lake brought home the Silver Medal from Slovenia.

Michaela Reports…

My aim for the week was to get into the top 16 as that would be respectable. I had taken a quite a few days of leave to train at South Wiltshire as they have a 3D course set up. My aim was to score 300 points per day for the 2 qualifying rounds to get into the final 16, and I had done this in practice on a few occasions so knew it was possible. (more…)

Other Sussex Archers in the Squad were High Weald Compound Archer Gary Cole who qualified in 3rd place, but finished just outside the medals in 5th Place, and Jason Meehan, also a High Weald Archer who took 20th Place in the Barebow class.

Meanwhile Crawley Archery Club alumna Jodie Grinham is starting her campaign in the Ladies Open Individual Compound Class at the Rio Paralympics.  Jodie now lives at Telford and has been training fulltime for the Para Games. Jodie finished the Rankings Round in 10th place and will face Eleanora Sarti of Italy on 16th September.

Michaela, Gary and Jason were all members of the England Team that won the Home International at the All-British Field Championships, and Michaela joined with Kevin Warwick to win the Top Team Award for Kingsbury.

Away from the Internationals… 15-yr-old Kai Thomas-Prause strung together some awesome performances and took the Bronze medal at the Bradford leg of the National Series on 5th September, including shooting the highest H2H score of the whole meeting and showing he’s more than a match to most of the top adult Compound Archers in the land – report and picture on the SCAA Facebook Page

Sussex Archers in Rio

Monday, August 8th, 2016

OlympicsGavinFacingGary580pxlTwo Worthing Archery Club members on the world stage today – Gavin Sutherland (right), representing Zimbabwe, supported by his Coach (and former Field World Champion) Gary Kinghorn.
Gavin faced World and Olympic Record holder Woojin Kim of Korea at the Sambodromo in Rio in the first round Head-to-Head. Against such odds few, if any, archers in the world could go against the form-book, and Kim won of course. But Gavin tossed in enough Tens to show why he was there, and did his Nation proud.

SCAA VI Archer at Euro Para Champs for GB

Thursday, April 14th, 2016

Carol DaviesCombinedStJeanDesMonts

Carol Davies, a visually impaired archer, seized the opportunity to shoot for GB at the European Para-archery Championships in Saint Jean De Monts, France in April 2016. Carol is a member of Blind Veterans UK Bowmen in Ovingdean, and is currently coached and supported by two Sussex County Coaches.

Carol thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tournament – including shooting against Steve Prowse the current world champion. Carol lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual bronze medallist Claudio Peruffo from Italy.

She described the tournament as “the experience of a lifetime” and would like to express her gratitude to SCAA for giving her a grant towards the cost of the trip.
