Carol DaviesCombinedStJeanDesMonts

Carol Davies, a visually impaired archer, seized the opportunity to shoot for GB at the European Para-archery Championships in Saint Jean De Monts, France in April 2016. Carol is a member of Blind Veterans UK Bowmen in Ovingdean, and is currently coached and supported by two Sussex County Coaches.

Carol thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tournament – including shooting against Steve Prowse the current world champion. Carol lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual bronze medallist Claudio Peruffo from Italy.

She described the tournament as “the experience of a lifetime” and would like to express her gratitude to SCAA for giving her a grant towards the cost of the trip.

Euro Field Champs!

Friday, November 6th, 2015

EuroChampsOct2015Sussex has a Junior European Field Champion and Two Junior Silver Medallists.

In a strongly-contested European Field Championships at Rzeszow in Poland, with temperatures swinging from below freezing to quite hot, Bryony Pitman of Worthing put down her marker for next year when she’ll move into the Senior ranks by beating top ranked Chiara Rebagliati 50 to 46 to become European Junior Lady Champion.

She was also part of the Silver-Medal-winning Junior Ladies team. Jamie Cole from Chichester performed strongly and got through to the Second Elimination Round in the Individual Competition, and then helped bring home a Silver Medal for the British Junior Men’s Team.

Pip Tucknott, who is now studying in Scotland, also shot for Team GB.

Alan Ruby

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

It’s sad to report the death of a life Vice-President (together with his wife Jean, who survives him) and former President of SCAA, Alan Ruby of Holbrook Archers, aged 87. There was a large turn-out of family, friends, clubmates and many past and present archers at Crawley Crematorium to pay respects and remember a good friend and supporter of Sussex Archery, who was also one of the real Characters, a man with Vision, Reason, and Passion.

Rod Woodhatch has sent a short Obituary, which focusses on his Archery, and doesn’t cover Alan the Musician and Jazz Trumpeter, Alan the Motor-Cyclist, or Alan the Family Man … (more…)

AGM Update

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

Following the AGM (see highlights below) there was a discussion on the ways the new proposals for Modernisation of ArcheryGB Membership might have an effect on Clubs and County. It was agreed that SCAA will send in a letter / representation, as in this file  >> Draft Reply which now has an additional paragraph referring to Junior and Disability Clubs

Deadline for Comments is 31st January. Immediate Action is now needed, first to attempt to answer the ‘SurveyMonkey’ questionnaire on the ArcheryGB website (but bear in mind you are only allowed to give a positive opinion on the proposals,  so it may be quite difficult to show how you feel) and also for clubs and individuals to write / email a reply, and also to send a copy of the reply to Freddy Collier , David Sharratt , Bryan Woodcock and Dave Harrison

To help think about your response, here is a file with Collected Responses from other counties, clubs and individuals

Chairman’s April Exec Com Digest

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Following the EGM on 30th March the committee met on 11th April to discuss a number of pressing items. I was pleased to be able to welcome a number of new members to the committee, which is now almost at full strength, and wish them a successful year in office.

One of our first duties was to co-opt Maggie Burford as County Junior Representative. She will liaise with Terry White, the County Junior Team Manger, to provide projects that will raise the profile of the Junior Team and county junior archery in general.

Final arrangements were put in place for the organisation of the first county match of the year. This was against Hampshire and held at the Crawley Archery Club grounds on 17th April and, for the first time that I can remember, was Record Status. Although we did not win on this occasion, there were a large number of Rose Award and county record claims and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.

See the report from Doreen Cannon, the Senior Team Manager, for full details.

I would like to add my thanks to that of Doreen to the small work party who put in so much effort to ensure that the match was successful. Well done, you were magnificent.

We have another match against Essex on 26th June. I wish all our archers good shooting and look forward to a win this time.

At the beginning of the year it was looking as if we would not be able to hold the County Championships as we were not able to fill the position of Tournament Organiser. I am delighted to be able to announce that Maggie Burford has agreed to take on this task and the Championship Weekend will be held on 9th & 10th July. I wish Maggie every success in this venture and ask that as many of our members as possible will be able to provide help over the weekend to ensure that our premier event is a great success.

Briefly, other items discussed included the SCAS/SCAA Indoor championships next year at the K2, the 200 Club, (please consider joining if you are not already a member), the Albion League, the publishing of county records and certificates, the ranking system and the provision of storage for the county’s equipment. There will be more news on these items as we progress.

Finally, I wish you all a good season & look forward to meeting you around the county.

Terry Maskell.
