It seems so long ago now but it is just a couple of weeks since the Sussex juniors were battling it out in Essex at the SCAS junior inter-county championships.
As well as some ol’timers in the team we had several archers just starting-out on the junior squad and representing their county for the first time. The intercounties is no ordinary shoot and whilst some faced demons to begin with they all pulled-it off tremendously. Morale was high and everyone made a good stand and proved themselves worthy of their place in the squad.
I have been around the junior circuit for a few years with my son, Thomas, but I cannot remember a better group of youngsters on a Sussex team and all should be proud of not only the way they shot but also how they carried themselves during the very long day.

Sussex junior inter-county team 2009
The teams comprised:
- Recurve:
Thomas Hooper
William Martin
Daniel Philips
Tom Winkworth
Hayley Foord
Bryony Pitman
- Compound:
Tyler White
Chris Davis
Jamie Cole
Stevie Kent
All our archers were selected on merit and amongst many personal achievments on the day was Jamie Cole’s who scored a fantastic and very precise 1250 to earn his first and last Rose award, the purple, and the highest individual compound score award.
Overall the teams were placed first in compound with a total score of 3518 (a whopping 288 ahead of second place Essex) and third in recurve with 4422 just 164 points behind first place and only 20 behind second place Norfolk.

A special note must go to Tyler White as this is to be his last intercounties after, well, more years than I know… Good luck in the senior squad, Tyler. A special thanks also goes to Terry White, not just for bringing Tyler along but for his support and for making fantastic quiver flags for all the team and celebratory pens too.

Bronze goes to recurve archers Thomas, William, Hayley and Bryony
It has been my great pleasure to work with our young archers in this tournament and I am very proud to have spent the day with them all.
This goes to show that in Sussex we have some great junior talent and if any junior archers out there are interested in shooting for Sussex you need to get yourself out and about on the 12-dozen rounds and flood Terry Maskell with scores and, very importantly, remember to allow for any change of distance you may have because of birthdays to avoid disappointment!
