Olympic Qualifier!! and Junior Team Success

Monday, July 8th, 2019

Sussex Archer Bryony Pitman (Worthing AC and University of Northumbria), who was the GB reserve for the Rio Olympics, has qualified for Tokyo 2020, a massive and well-deserved achievement. Many congratulations from us all.

Sussex Juniors came out on top at the 3-way Match at Woking between Surrey, Kent and Sussex. Petra Ginman who was Team Captain also acted as Team Manager, and reports that the combined-bowstyle Junior team came out on top, with all the Senior Bowstyles ending in Second Place.

Two Sussex Junior Gents were selected to shoot for England in the Home International at the Junior Indoor Championships in December, Marc Charlesworth (Recurve – Arundown) and Nathan Thomas (Compound – Worthing) tasted victory when the England Team came out on top as clear winners.
On the following day, Bryony Pitman (Worthing) finished as Lady Recurve Champion at the Senior National Indoor Meeting.

Sussex Top in New Field Inter-Counties

Thursday, November 16th, 2017

KentIC2017WebHeader580pxlKent Archery Association arranged the first-ever Southern Counties Inter-Counties Field Event held on 15th October. Several of the Counties invited decided not to take part this year because some of their best archers had been invited to a Selection Shoot on the same day – as indeed were ours. But Sussex has some strength in depth so we were able to field a Field Team (with a little help from our friends – see the Team Captain’s report below).

Team Captain Nick Lea’s Report….
I’m very pleased to announce that Sussex were victorious at the Kent field inter-county shoot on Sunday!
We claimed 1st, 2nd and 4th places in what was the first inter-county field tournament in the UK.  Chris Horan and Bob Beany are hoping to make this pilot tournament a regular event and act as template for other counties to follow suit. Kent had extended an invitation to ourselves, Surrey and Essex.  The fact that Surrey and Essex felt they had to withdraw due to lack of archers highlights the difficulties we were all facing. Sussex Win 1st World Record Status Match

Thursday, May 18th, 2017

Sussex 27,091 – Hampshire 25,201

One of Pete Probert’s aims as County Chairman was to ratchet County Matches and Championships up a notch, and apply for World Record Status instead of just UK RS. Well, his wish has come true, but maybe a little sooner than planned as both the Hampshire Match and the County Championships have been given WRS this year, although that may be the result of a tick in the wrong box on the Application Forms. This truly dropped the County Team Manager Nick Lea in at the deep end as, although not nominally the Tournament Organiser it was his job to sort out all the practical details, and it wasn’t just a normal County Match, his first-ever Home Match was also the first ever Outdoor World Record Status Shoot organised by County (although there have been a few others organised by Sussex Clubs). County Clashes Completed

Thursday, December 8th, 2016

The Sussex Team shot two Matches this year, first the Southern Region Inter-Counties at Oxford in September where eleven counties fielded teams, and at the end of November a four-way shoot against Kent, Surrey and Essex hosted by Kent at Sittingbourne.

2016 Intercounties Group 580pxlSussex sent Senior Recurve and Compound teams to the Regional Inter-Counties (above), and a Junior Compound team – which shot brilliantly and came First. There was no Junior recurve team, but one of our Junior ladies made it into the Senior Team.
The 4-way Indoor Match was a smaller-scale affair, and Recurve, Compound, Longbow and Barebow teams were sent, although on this occasion the Juniors in the team were on an equal footing with the Seniors.

Hants Match Senior Manager’s Report

New National Ladies WA 1440 Record by Sussex Archer

2014SussexHantsMatchThe Sussex Seniors won three out of the four Bowstyles – but Hampshire won the Match on Aggregate because Sussex were short on Juniors

The county team met up at the Southampton ground ready for our annual match against Hampshire. Some of us had not been there before, so we managed to lose one member, but luckily he did turn up right on the dot, thanks to the Hampshire team giving instructions over a mobile phone!
The day was very pleasant; good company, good scores and good weather – with a nice ground thrown in – what more could you want!!!

County Match versus Hants 5th May 2013

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

The traditional season-opening match against Hampshire took place at the Hazelwick Ground in Crawley on Sunday in pleasant weather conditions (the start of a trend, hopes  Team Manager Doreen Cannon), and thanks to the Ground Crew, the Refreshment Providers, and to equipment acquired and serviced over the winter, the shoot ran smoothly.
The result was a win by Hampshire, but they didn’t have it all their own way by any means, the honours were pretty well shared, but they racked up more points thanks to some brilliant barebow Juniors, and in spite of a big win by our Recurve Juniors, it was their Barebows (senior as well as junior) and their Junior Compounds who carried the honours away.
The final result also included 1100 points from their Junior Longbows, with Sussex being unable to field any Junior Longbow archers. Looking forward to the Inter-Counties in September, it’s highly likely that Junior Longbows will be included. Sooo… if any Sussex Clubs out there have any, please encourage them and start them on the path towards shooting the 12-dozen rounds!!

Sussex triumphs at 3-County Shoot

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

SCAATeam30thSept2012reportheaderThe three-way match held at Crawley on 30th September between Surrey, Essex and Sussex  ended in an overall victory by the home county for both  Seniors and Juniors.
Although the setting up of the field on Saturday was on a glorious day, Sunday started off overcast, and then became very windy – very tricky conditions for the archers!
