Sussex v Hampshire, 17th April 2011

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

On Sunday 17th April Sussex welcomed Hampshire to the annual match, which for the first time was a record status event and – wow – what a day! Mid April, and it was warm, sunny, very little wind, not a fleece or woolly hat in sight! Not the usual county match weather, but we were all very grateful.

Seven disciplines from each county made up the overall team, and the result was close – Hampshire 22768, Sussex 21980. The archers did very well too: seven Six Gold End claims; 20 Rose Award claims; and county records went tumbling to several Sussex and Hampshire archers. Many congratulations to everyone.

The County would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event successful. There was only a very small working party, and all equipment had to be transferred from Hove to Crawley (and back again!) , and mention should be made of Terry Maskell, Cliff Knapp, Bob Darling, Sy Grinham, Maggie Burford, Dave Howard (COAC), and Jeff Russell (COAC) who did a lot of moving the equipment, and to Jodie Grinham and Emily Darling who assisted with the running. Sy and Maggie were also asked at the very last minute to put on catering, which they did very well, and Julia Tucknott made the cake for Pip Tucknott’s 16th birthday! Thank you too to Peter Damon for arranging the venue.

We would also like to thank our Judge, Mr Robin Frost, who kept things moving during the day, and for the team managers Melanie-Anne Sandford (Hants) and Doreen Cannon and Terry White (Sussex) for keeping the leader boards up to date during the day.

Our next match is against Essex on 26th June at Crawley. Invitations will be sent out in the next day or two.

2010 SCAS Junior Inter-Counties Championships

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

A splendid performance by the Sussex Junior team on Sunday, 15th August resulted in the Recurve team finishing second to Essex by the narrow margin of 57 points, while the Compound team successfully defended the title it won last year.

Champions! Team Manager Terry White with the Sussex Junior Compound team of Daniel Allen, Stevie Kent, Jamie Cole and Pip Tucknott.

Congratulations to the members of both teams.  It was quite a performance in difficult conditions and against tough opposition.

While everyone played their part in a memorable day for Sussex archery, including compound team reserve Peter Moore, Tom Winkworth’s personal best of 1114 in the Bristol II Recurve was a stand-out achievement and just reward for much dedicated effort this year.

The same can be said for all three members of the Compound team. Daniel Allen showed remarkable composure in shooting a personal best for third place in the Bristol I; Jamie Cole determinedly overcame a stomach upset to put together another exceptional score that proved to be the best by a boy in the Bristol III; and Pip Tucknott, realising a long-held ambition to represent Sussex at the Inter-Counties, put in a great effort to anchor the team to victory with 1260 in the Bristol II.  Congratulations again, lads; you are quite a team.

Sussex took second place in the Recurve Championships, one place higher than last year, and they look justifiably pleased with their efforts: Bryony Pitman, Hayley Foord, Will Martin, Tom Winkworth and Abigail Goacher

Full scores from the shoot can be downloaded here.

Much credit must also go to the team manager, Terry White, who was ably assisted by his wife Pam. Terry’s style of team management doesn’t involve any of the hype or fuss that others have brought to the post in the recent past; instead a combination of sensible team selection, plenty of encouragement when needed and a genuine skill in getting the kids to enjoy their day proved to be a winning formula. Well done, Terry!

Essex triumphs over Sussex

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Last Sunday’s county match against Essex ended in a convincing win for the visitors in both senior and junior matches, due largely to below par performances by the County’s recurve archers.  The team and individual scores can be downloaded in pdf format using the links below:

In stark contrast to the Hampshire match in April, the shoot was blessed with near-perfect conditions for archery throughout most of the day with not a single fleece and barely a beanie in sight.

Congratulations to the Essex team and thanks to the judges, Keith and Gwen Mills.

Thanks also to Crawley AC who hosted the match at their new ground.
