The tournament was shot as a single detail, so it was unhurried with everyone on their way home at a very reasonable time. Saturday had been planned to suit Novice and Intermediate Archers, and some did take part, but not as many as hoped. But it was great to see the ones who did taking on their first ‘real’ tournament. The weather was windy on Saturday, overcast and showery at the start but turning warm and bright, Sunday was dry and sunny with a light wind.
Special thanks to all the Volunteers, including …
Set-out of range layout: Dave Webster, Rod Brown
Equipment fabrication: Chris Chedzoy, Kevin Doswell
Placing Targets and arranging the layout of the field on Friday : Geri Barnden, Tony Jerome, Helen Butcher, Richard Bennett, Nick Lea, Andras Tokes, Ben Green, Kevin Lambie, Graham Stevens
Before, during and after the Shoot: Bob and Brenda New, Rowena Berterelli, Roo Williamson, András Tőkés, Philip Van Buren, Rod Brown, Charles Poland, Mark Worsfold, Geri Barnden, Richard Bennett, Keith Cross
And to Ardingly Scouts who laid on the Food Stand.

After 9 Years – 2 UK Records at once at the K2

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

It’s no easy thing to set a new UK Indoor Record, and since 2009 over two thousand Rounds have been shot at the SCAS and Sussex Indoors Championships at Crawley’s K2 Centre, and until this year’s shoot on 5th May not a single UK record had been claimed. And then there were two, and the archers were on adjoining targets!

Kai Thomas-Prause showed that his phenomenal National Series performance last year was no flash in the pan, and shot a 593 Portsmouth to claim the Junior Compound Record. And Bryony Pitman came in as a late entrant with a new bow to try out before flying out to Vittel later in the day to take part in the European Indoor Championships. She didn’t need to worry, the bow performed like a dream and Bryony clocked up 595 points – and she went on to win a Bronze Medal in the Junior Ladies Team event at the Euros, and capped it by being ranked no 2 and winning the Silver Medal for the Junior Ladies Recurve class.

The K2 Hall on 6th March 2016

Results etc are on the >>Event Webpage<<

Sussex County AA successfully hosted another Southern Region and Sussex County Indoor Championships meeting at the K2 Centre in Crawley on Sunday 6th March.

Archers and Officials paused for a while at the start of each session to remember Chris Tucknott, the man who in 2009 came up with the idea of holding this major tournament in our county, in what was then the newest and largest hall in Local Authority ownership in England. (more…)

County Championships – McMullan Honoured

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

RogerMacMullanCertificateAMSCAA President Philip Van Buren presented a Silver Medal and Certificate to Roger McMullan on behalf of the Southern Counties Archery Society in recognition of thirty-plus years of Judging in the Region. For much of that time Roger was the only Judge based in Sussex. Wherever Roger has gone to judge, wife Zillah been along too as at least 50% of a brilliant double-act, and Sussex County was delighted she accepted the invitation to be Lady Paramount on Championships Day. The McMullan’s contribution is truly immeasurable, and whole generations of archers have grown up helped along by Roger and Zillah in their inimitable way.

Roger’s retirement almost meant we were Judgeless – but as one door closed behind Roger, another opened for Julie Pede to step in as Candidate Judge, and we wish her all the very best and can’t wait for her to be become qualified.

As this is the Sussex Website, the report comes from a Sussex Perspective, but the support from around the Southern Counties Region was remarkable this year, particularly when the distances some of the competitors travelled is taken into account. The Championships sessions of the shoot were over-subscribed, and  around twenty people either didn’t get in to the shoot, or had to make do with one session when they’d hoped to shoot a double round.
